prenatal services

I have been a Registered Nurse since 2006 and have worked in the family-child field for my whole career. Having nursing experience in the hospital, clinic and home settings has given me the opportunity to work with families from conception through to early childhood years. I started educating families in 2008 and have had the honour of working with thousands of patients/clients over my career.  I am proud to say that I am also a mama of three, and I can understand the transitions parents have to work through while growing their families.

Whether you are just starting your family or completing it, I would love to help in any way that I can. Thank you for considering me along your way,

Hillery Taylor RN BN

THE PRENATAL PERIOD (Waiting for Baby)

In pregnancy, patients routinely see their caregivers in clinic to assess the health of the pregnant patient and their unborn child. Though the visits may be frequent, clinic visits are often rushed and patients often desire more education, discussion and support in the prenatal period.

I have been working with pregnancy and birthing since 2006, and have been an educator since 2008. I strive to help birthers understand the process of pregnancy and birth, and in that, find their own power and birth story.

The Postpartum Period (After Baby)

In Manitoba, prenatal patients will see their doctor/midwife on average 12 times throughout pregnancy. Postpartum patients will typically see their doctor one time outside of the hospital setting, and unfortunately nurses and physicians are often difficult to access in the community.

I believe that after having a baby, you deserve to be cared for and supported, both physically and emotionally. It is documented that parents who get this care and support have better physical and mental outcomes (improved healing, higher chances of breastfeeding rates, reduction of risk of postpartum depression, increased parent confidence, as well an increase in self-assessed parent-child bonding).

If you’re feeling nervous about caring for your newborn after birth and want to feel as prepared and confident as possible, I would love to help.

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)

What is TENS?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electronic Nerve Stimulation) is a safe, effective, easy to use drug-free method of pain relief. It has been successfully used for many years by pregnant women and professional care providers worldwide to treat pain or inflammation and to ease the pain of labour and delivery. TENS is thought to stimulate the release of endorphins (happy hormones) in the body; our body’s own natural pain reliever.  TENS is also thought to block pain signals from reaching the brain by using a pain gate control theory.

When should I use TENS?

You are encouraged to try out the unit when you bring it home or prior to going into labour so that you are familiar with how it works, have time to ask any questions you may have and feel the sensation it produces. *Remember, the pads are reusable, as long as you store them correctly

You can use TENS at home as soon as your labour begins, all the way through to post birth. *Remember to take it off if you have a shower or use a birthing pool!

The advantages of using TENS during childbirth include:

-Totally safe
-Allows mother to control her pain relief
-No effect on the baby
-Allows mother to be mobile during labour

Included with Tens:

-Machine
-Remote Hand Switch
-2 Lead Probs
-1 Battery in machine and 1 spare Battery
-Quick Start Instructions
-Owners Manual
