Description
When can you use TENS?
You are encouraged to try out the unit when you bring it home or prior to going into labour so that you are familiar with how it works, have time to ask any questions you may have and feel the sensation it produces. Remember, the pads are reusable, as long as you store them correctly.
You can use TENS at home as soon as your labour begins, all the way through to the birth. Just remember to take it off if you use a birthing pool!
When labour begins, your midwife or birth partner can attach the electrodes to your back. Plug the electrodes into your control unit and you are ready to begin using the TENS. Positive effects can be felt immediately. Nurses and not required to help you with the TENS machine.
After you have had your baby, if you are in pain consider using the unit, as it will give you relief and ease after-pains as your uterus contracts, and help you to manage the discomfort of an episiotomy or tear.
You can also use the machine is you had a caesarean; the unit can be used during labour. It can also help with discomfort after the birth by placing the pads next to the stitches/scar.
The advantages of using TENS during childbirth include:
- Completely safe
